A dash cam is an insurance policy you record continuously, and its value is almost always proven after the fact: at a car park, at a junction, or in a dispute about who moved first. What matters when you install it

The camera is only as useful as its card and its power. Fit a card rated for continuous writing - ordinary cards die in weeks in a recorder - and set the loop recording so the oldest footage is overwritten rather than the recorder stopping when the card fills. Run the power lead down behind the trim rather than across the screen, and check the aim after the first drive: a camera pointed at the sky records clouds very clearly. Make sure the interior-facing cameras do not cover a passenger's face if you are going to share the car.
