Waterproof Underground Metal Detector

A metal detector is a hobby you cannot try by watching videos, because the whole thing happens at the signal - the tone that changes as the coil passes over something. This one is the standard handheld format: a control housing with a display, an adjustable stem and a waterproof search coil, which between them mean it can be used on a field, a beach and in shallow water rather than on dry land only.

Getting started with it

Sweep the coil a couple of inches above the ground, slowly, in overlapping arcs, and keep the coil level - a coil that lifts at the end of the swing loses the small targets you are looking for. The trick to a first session is not finding treasure, it is learning what your machine says about a bottle cap, a nail and a coin, because after an hour those three things sound different to you as well as to the detector. Practise in your own garden with a few coins buried at known depths before going anywhere. Keep the control housing dry even though the coil is waterproof.
